Hi there - I currently live in the DTES. I know, it’s not the greatest area, but it works for me. You see, I have some health issues that I'm dealing with, and they are expensive! I am fighting both mental health issues AND cancer. The meds the docs have me on are outrageously expensive and I can’t afford them.
I confess, I do use street drugs - they are affordable and give me some relief from the pain of my disease. Please don’t judge - I haven’t found a viable alternative just yet. You see, in the DTES, we are a family. I can live my life without judgment. My community supports me in my struggle and doesn’t point fingers at me. Can you say the same thing? My name is Johnny.

Even though the DTES may not be the greatest neighborhood, but it has one of the greatest qualities that any and every neighborhood should have...no judgement!

What can we take anyway from Johnny's story? ADAPT
Think about this for a moment: you're in the DTES and life isn't exactly in your favor at the moment. Then one day you get diagnosed with a horrible illness and you can't afford the meds.... now what? would you rather live with the excruciating pain that comes along with this horrible illness or succumb to street drugs to numb the pain...? Though question, I know. Just ask Johnny....

Would you be able to manage your medication?
If not, where would you go and what would you sacrifice?
How would you adapt to the pain without any medication?
How would you feel being judged by someone who has no idea what you're going through?
Meds are expensive. period! Disabilities caused by an illness effects the rest of your life and there's just no going back. If you are living with a disability, there are programs and services available you. the Government of British Columbia are one of those providers. Don't hesitate to contact the government to receive disability assistance, support and services.

Love his swag!
Compassion, basic common decencies, and caring seem to be lacking in our world.
May the volunteers and those living in pain and judgment all be blessed with health, happiness, and financial stability.
If you’re in a position to donate food, time, or money then please do so.
A very powerful story. Definitely food for thought.
so moving <3
It's ain't what you give, it's the way that you give it. Well shared. Keep up the good work 👍
